Breakfast @ Kopitiams

Kopitiam Breakfast

I love breakfasts in Singapore.

I really do.  They have these eateries call kopitiams and this is a typical breakfast – two soft-boil eggs, a stack of kaya toasts and a kopi-c. The eggs are soft-boiled, so please watch out as it might run when you crack them. The toasts boast a thick slab of butter aside from the kaya (don’t think about it, just eat, it tastes great) and the kopi is very thick with a wallop of condensed milk on the bottom.  See the soy sauce and the pepper on the top left of the picture?  That goes into the soft-boiled eggs once you cracked them into the bowl.

For those who are new to Singapore, “kopi” is the local version of coffee.  It’s thick, strong, sweet and very good.  Since we are at it, “teh” is tea – it’s very good also.   Here’s how you can order :

  • Kopi-O > Kopi, sugar but no cream
  • Kopi-C > Kopi, evaporated milk & sugar
  • Kopi-Bing > Kopi on ice

It goes the same way for Teh : teh-o, teh-c ..etc.  MC Wong has a terrific article on the different variations in his blog.

Next time you are in town – try this!   Oh yes, I have seen these things call “Milo Dinosaur” as well, I haven’t tried it yet, if you have, please leave us your comments!!
